ZIP (file format)

The ZIP file extension is a form of compression and data archiving. A ZIP file contains one or more compressed files to reduce their size. This kind of format allows a number of algorithmic compressions.

It was created in 1986 by Phil Katz for his software PKZIP and evolved from the ARC compression format developed by Thom Henderson.

ZIP files usually use file extensions like .zip or .ZIP.
