Yahoo! Messenger is an instant messaging client supplied by Yahoo!. Yahoo! Messenger is offered for free and can be downloaded and used with an Yahoo! account. Users are announced immediately when they receive a new message or e-mail. Also Yahoo! Messenger offers services of file transfer from one computer to another, from computer to phone, from phone to PC, web cam host, text messages services and chat rooms.
Yahoo! Messenger was initially launched under the name of Yahoo! Pager on March 9 1998.
In addition to instant messaging characteristics in ICO, Yahoo! Messenger also offers: IMVironments (customize the aspect of the messenger window), Address Book, status messages. This was the first client to offer the "Buzz" characteristic and the music status. Another characteristic recently added is the customizable avatar.
On December 5 2007 Yahoo! Messenger announced the launch of Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista as a Beta version. This was including the Glass Windows transparency and a new aspect and another GUI. Starting with 25 October 2008, Yahoo! Messenger is not available anymore for the Vista version
On 29 October 2007 Yahoo! Messenger announced the launch of Yahoo! Messenger 9, Beta version. This one had a new improved interface and new emoticons.
Yahoo! announced a partnership with Microsoft to join their instant messaging network. This makes Yahoo! Messenger compatible with the instant messaging service Microsoft NET. This change took place on July 13 2006 when Yahoo! Messenger integrated the instant messaging with Windows Live Messenger.

Yahoo! Voice
Yahoo! Voice is a VoIP service for PC-PC, PC-phone, Phone-PC. The possibility to make phone calls from PC-PC and PC-phone is available all over the world bu the possibility to make a phone call Phone-PC is available only in Great Britain, USA and France.
Voice mail
Yahoo! added the Yahoo! Messenger client the voice mail feature and the file sharing feature where users can share files with size up to 2 GB.
Plug-ins
Starting with the 8.0 version Yahoo! Messenger added the ability for users to create plug-ins (using a free Yahoo! Messenger Plug-in SDK) hosted and presented in Yahoo! Plug-in Gallery.
Yahoo! mail and conversation archive
Yahoo! planned to integrate Yahoo! Mail Beta and Yahoo! Messenger with conversations that could be archived and stored in the same way e-mails could.
Web cam
The Yahoo! software allows users to use the web cam service. This allows users who are far away from each other to view them using a web cam. The service is free with medium speeds between 1 and 2 frames per second.
