User profile

A set of information describing a certain user like user name, password and other personal details. Therefore a profile is the explicit digital representation of a person's identity.
A user profile can be used to store a person's characteristics. These information can be exploited by systems taking into consideration a person's characteristics and preferences. For example profiles can be used by hypermedia systems personalizing the human - computer interaction.
Profiling is the process referring to building a profile by extracting information from a set of data.
User profile can be found in OS, computer programs or other dynamic sites like online social networks.
User profile in dynamic web sites
Usually online forums allow user profiles where the user can write a short description about itself and can add a picture. For example on Youtube it can be displayed the name and the profile of the user who added a video.
Profiles are very elaborate on social networks like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn where people have the possibility to describe their identity. Although information presented on these profiles can't be trusted.

User profiles can be found in OS too like Microsoft Windows or Mac OS and are used to store information and elements assigned to a certain user.
