Twitter is a free micro blogging social network (short messages up to 200 characters) that allows users to send updates regarding their activity to their network of friends. These updates are posted on user's page and reach those who follow the user.
For someone to see a user's messages it has to follow that user.
Twitter's advantage in front of instant messaging like Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, etc is that you can communicate with several people at the same time, just like posting on a blog, only that you can't use more than 200 characters on a message.
