Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a Internet transportation standard for e-mail on Internet networks. While e-mail servers and other e-mail transfer agents use SMTP to send and receive users' e-mails, client applications usually use SMTP only to send messages to server. To receive messages, client applications use either POP protocol or IMAP protocol.
