Romanian Police

The Romanian Police is a specialized state institution exercising attributions regarding protection of fundamental rights and freedoms of the people, public and private property, preventing and discovering crimes, public order and safety compliance within law's conditions. The institution is part of Ministry of Administration and Interns.
Romanian Police's activity constitute in specialized public service realized in the interest of people, community, state institutions exclusively based on laws and for executing them.

Short history
First attestations of Romanian Police were registered in the times of Neagoe Basarab or the ruler Mihai Viteazu. Registers continue with the reign of Mihai Sutzu (it has been organized the first guard of the capital, have been issued the first IDs and has been regulated the carrying of weapons). Since 1806 the capital's bodies of guard and order are called POLICE.
In 1821 Tudor Vladimirescu granted exemptions from taxes to those charged with maintaining public order and protecting citizens' properties. In 1831 by Organic Regulations Police's attributions were expanded. During the 1848 Revolution there was a reorganization of the police by the emergence of the Chief of Capital Police institution to which was subordinated the municipal Guardia.
On June 9 1850 Ghica Voda issued "Police Chronic" that in 158 articles regulate the High Police's tasks and the ones of the "Common Police". This constituted the moment of creation for the first central structure with attributions to organize and coordinate police activities.
Police bodies' responsibilities were extended starting with police organization law of Alexandru Ioan Cuza (November 4 1860), followed by Vasile Lascar's law (April 1 1903) and the law for general police organization (July 8 1929). Relationships with other state structures have been much better regulated.
On January 23 1949 trough Decree no. 25 was founded the "Militia" and then trough Law - Decree no. 2 December 27 1989 was reestablished Romanian Police whose responsibilities were further regulated by Law no. 26 May 18 1994 and Law no 218 April 23 2002.
Since 1990 the Police suffered several transformation steps designed to ensure safety of people, communities, citizen's rights, etc.
Legal framework
Law no. 218 April 23 2002 represents general legal framework regulating Romanian Police's activity regarding organization and functioning of the Romanian Police.
Policeman status adopted by Law no. 360 from 2002 completes and details provisions on the conduct, in limits and according to law, of activities for community.
Particular attention was given to amend and supplement the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code regarding protection of agent, witness and data. Also particular attention was given to Law of Public Local Administration regarding fight against organized crime and Law regarding fight against crimes committed with the help of high technology.
Romanian Police Day
25 March was the date designated as being representative for Romanian Police. This date is stipulated in article no. 50 of Law no. 218 April 23 2002. This date is the christian symbol of Annunciation. This symbol is also found on Romanian Police's flag.
