The term open source describes the production and development of certain products allowing the users' access to freely act on the production process.

Because is very frequent used in software development some specialists may have the impression that the term is specific to computer technology, but actually it can be applied in any domain involving a product.

Saferpedia is an example of product with an open source because allows any user to contribute to the final product - the safe encyclopedia.

In software development the term open source describes the fact that users have access to the source code and they can modify it.
