Online game is defined as a digital game requiring an internet connection to be played and allow interaction between several players.
First person games
During 1990 online games started to migrate from a variety of network protocols like IPX to TCP/IP protocols. The game Doom popularized the death match concept where several players fight with each other.
Real time strategy games
Early real time strategy games allowed multi user players using a modem or a local network. As Internet started to grow in 1990s were developed software allowing users to use LAN protocols to play game over the Internet. Until the late 90s most RTS (Real Time Strategy) games allowed users all over the world to play network games. Later there have been formed communities of active players, for example games: Age of Empires and Microsoft Ants.
Cross platform games
The first online console game was Super Famicom offering an online service with Satellaview only in Japan. Once the online games industry developed open source networks like Play Station 2, Dreamcats, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube took advantage of online games functionality. Games like Fantasy Star Online have private servers working on multiple joysticks.
Browser games
There have been developed single player games using HTML and scripting technologies (JavaScript, ASP, PHP and MySQL). The development of technologies based on web graphic like Flash and Java allowed browser games to become more complex. These games also known as Flash Games or Java Games became more popular.
