The term online is specific for computer and telecommunication technology. Generally online indicates a state of connectivity to Internet.

Standard definitions

The term is defined by Federal Standard 1037C and represents a state or a condition of a device of a functional unit. To be considered online a device must be:

• Under direct control of another device;
• Under direct control of the system is assigned to;
• Availability for immediate use on system's request without human intervention;
• Connected to a functional system;
• Functional and ready to work.

Online e-mail

One example of this concept's use is a e-mail client in the online state. The e-mail client will attempt to log on e-mail servers to check for new messages, at certain periods of time, as long as it is online.
