The offline term is specific to computer technology and telecommunications. In general, offline indicates a state of not connected but in common use offline refers to non virtual activities that are not on the Internet.

An example of using this concept is an e-mail client that can be configured to work either online or offline. When the mail client is offline it will not try to connect to any e-mail server. This is not linked to the fact that the computer is connected or not to the Internet.

Another example is a web browser. This can be configured to work offline when the user will browse trough web pages saved locally.
