OSI
From Saferpedia
The OSI reference model (Open Systems Interconnection) is a hierarchical communication structure widely used in order to represent a network. OSI is a standard of ISO (International Standard Organization) issued in 1984.
The OSI reference model propose some general criterion for system communication and information exchange whatever the building particularities of the network, like producer, operating system, country, etc. OSI can be applied in all data communication domains not just in computer networks.
The OSI Reference Model divides the complex issue of communications between two or more systems in 7 distinct layers in a hierarchical structure. Each layer has well determined functions and communicates only with the layers near them.
Although today are other systems too, most communication equipment suppliers use the OSI model to train users in using equipments. It's considered that OSI is the best way to understand the way information is sent and received.
