A network switch is a device realizing the connection between different network segments based on their MAC addresses. Switches realizes connection of 10, 100 or even 1000 MO per second.

A switch uses 4 methods to re-transmit data:

  • Store and send - the switch act as a buffer;
  • Cut trough - the switch only reads the hardware address of the frame before sending it further. There is no error detector;
  • Fragment free - it combines the two upper methods. The first 64 bytes of a frame are checked storing the addressing information. This way the frame will always reach its destination. Error detection is left to terminal devices on levels 3 and 4 usually routers.
  • Adaptive switching - the method automatically switches between the three previous methods.

The "Cut trough" method appeals to "Store and send" if the receiver port is busy when the package arrives. Methods are not controlled by user, they are switch's exclusive tasks.

Characteristics to configure

  • switch on/off on ports;
  • link speed and duplex settings;
  • set priority on ports;
  • MAC filtering;
  • Use the Spanning Tree protocol;
  • monitor by SNMP (simple network management protocol) of the device and the connection;
  • port's mirroring (mirroring, monitoring, spanning);
  • link's aggregation (bonding, trunking);
  • VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) settings.
