The structure of a motherboard

The motherboard is a complex hardware component on which are mounted the rest of the hardware components of a PC or other electronic device.

Types

PC motherboards are categorized on dimensions:

  • Extended ATX
  • ATX
  • microATX
  • BTX
  • mini-ITX
  • nano-ITX
  • pico-ITX

Motherboard's components

  • chipset (northbridge and southbridge)
  • socket of the processor
  • RAM slots
  • ISA, PCI, PCI-Express slots
  • BIOS chip
  • BIOS battery
  • USB, SATA, eSATA, PATA, Firewire, S/PDIF (analog, optic) ports
  • USB, CD-IN, Firewire, S/PDIF headers

Motherboards can have integrated features like:

Normally this is a cheap and convenient solution. For quality features and speed there are used separate cards connected to the motherboard.
