µTorrent is a free software with closed source used to load and download files. The software is a BitTorrent client of BitTorrent Inc. and is available for OS Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.
It received good ratings for its features, performance, stability and support for older windows versions. A report showed that µTorrent is the second most popular client BitTorrent after the Chinese Xunlei.
History
Early development
Serge Paquet suggested to Ludvig Strigeus that it should make a small and efficient BitTorrent client. Strigues started the concept which, at that time, did not include so many features. The first version appeared on September 18 2005.
In the first versions, Strigeus displayed commercials in a frame inside the software
On March 4 2006, PeerFactor SARL announced that Strigeus signed a contract to develop new software based on web content.
On December 7 2006, µTorrent was bought by BitTorrent Inc. as announced on their official forum. µTorrent continued to have its own site and its own community and the source remained closed. Ludvig Strigeus was going to be technical consultant and BitTorrent Inc. was going to do the development work.
On September 18 2007 was launched BitTorrent 6.0 renamed as µTorrent.
