From Saferpedia
KDE is a software project, free, a desktop environment designed to run on operating systems like Linux, FreeBSD, Windows and Mac OS X. The purpose of this project is to offer desktop functions and applications for day - to - day requests and tools and documentations for developers to write stand alone applications for the system. So the KDE project serves as an umbrella project for many stand alone applications and smaller projects based on KDE technology. These include Koffice, Kdevelop, Amarok, K3b and many others.
