Intranet is a private informational network owned by a company allowing only for employees access to company's resources.

Features

A Intranet is built using the same concepts and technologies used for Internet like a Client-Server Architecture and the TCP/IP suite protocols. Any protocols used on the Internet can be used in an Intranet like: HTTP (web services), SMTP (e-mail) and FTP (file transfer).

The first Intranet sites appeared in companies in 1990-1991 and became common first in universities and technological corporations.

Intranet can offer a gateway to the Internet using an access point protected by a firewall. The gateway implements user authentication, encryption of messages and connection to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for off site employees.
