Gateway

In telecommunications the gateway is:

  • An equipment of a network node making the connection with another network using different protocols.
  • A gateway may include devices like protocol translators, devices to adjust the impedance, rate converter, error isolators or signal transmitter required for systems' interoperability.
  • A protocol mapping gateway interconnects technological networks with different protocols using protocol conversions.
  • A computer configured to realize a gateway's tasks.

Routers are a special case of gateway.
