Firmware defines special software in small size ensuring the command and control of complex devices, like: digital photo cameras, computers, CD-players, DVD-players or MP3 players, routers, mobiles, GPS, video game consoles, hard disks, keyboards and desktops.

Usually simple firmware is stored in ROM or OTP / PROM memories while complex firmware require flash memories in order to allow updates.

Generally, firmware uses small quantities of memory and is specialized exclusively for the device is on.

Firmware is also called microprogram or microcode shortened μcode.

Firmware should not be confused with software which is a more complex code or with driver which is a software that connects computer hardware with software elements.
