File sharing is the action to distribute or provide access to information, such as computer programs, multi-media (audio, video) or documents. Most of file exchange is realized using P2P (peer-to-peer) networks - from equal to equal.

Types of file sharing

P2P file sharing

Users can search for shared files in a P2P network and then download them directly from the user. If there are large files they are broken into pieces and then reassembled.

File hosting service

File hosting services are an alternative to P2P and are sites hosting files so that others can download them.
