A database, also called a data bank represents a way to store information and data on an external support (a storage device) with the possibility of extending it and the possibility to find easy any piece of information.

The most spread database type is the relational one, where data are stored in tables. Besides tables, a relational database may also contain: indexes, storage procedures, triggers, users and groups of users, data types, security mechanisms and transactions management.

Other types of databases are: the hierarchical model, the object oriented model and newest the XML model.
