Data Protection Day

Data Protection Day is celebrated each January 28, being an initiative of European Council and European Commission, aiming to increase the awareness of personal privacy risk and civil rights under privacy law. The contest is organized by European School Net and Microsoft, with the support of academic and governmental institutions, under the auspices of the European Council. Data protection Day is the equivalent of Awareness Week, event that takes place in Europe and Pacific Asia in May.
Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff, declared: Data Protection Day in Europe is a good opportunity to reflect over global risks regarding private life protection, like the need of global solutions. In today's economy interconnected, what happens today in Nijmegen or Bratislava may have an impact in Ngaruawahia or Balcutha".
Data Protection Day in Romania
Romania participated at Data Protection Day in 2009 for the first time and won with the project called "ID" realized by a team of teens from the "Mihail Sadoveanu" high school in Pascani.
Their project highlighted how public a person's identity can get in the online environment, the jury considering that their project surprised the best the risk of vulnerability in the online environment. At the contest participated young with ages between 19 and 16 years from other European countries, which sent over 70 video materials.
The winning team, consisting of: Crețu Andreea-Cătălina, Chișcă Raluca-Elena, Ilinca Răzvan-Alexandru, Spinu Dragoș-Marian și Coman Cosmin-Bogdan, participated at the Sigur.info national program launching conference, on February 10 2009. They received Honorary Diploma and were awarded by Microsoft Romania.
In 2010, Romania had nominated three projects in the contest: "Are You in control", "No escape" and "Identity Theft"
