The Cracker is the person dealing with removing software protections like: copy protection, protection to use trial or demo versions of a software, protection trough serial, hardware key, etc.

Using and distributing cracked software is illegal in almost all developed countries. European Union adopted the "EU Copyright" directive in May 2001 specifying that cracking actions are violations of copyright.

The first protection against copying were the early software Apple II, Atari 800 and Commodore 64. Software developers, especially games developers resorted to more and more complex measures of protection to stop unauthorized copy of own software.
