A blog (shortcut from web log) is a kind of site usually maintained by a single person regularly publishing comments, events description or other materials like videos or pictures, graphics, etc. Entries are published in reverse chronological order.

Many blogs offer comments or news on a specific subject and other operate like personal online journals. A typical blog combines texts, images and links to other blogs, web pages or other media means referring its subject. An important aspect of a blog is that readers may leave comments to an article or post of the owner.

There are several types of blogs like: text blogs, art blogs, photo blogs, video blogs, MP3 blogs, podcasting blogs, micro blogs (short publication).

Starting December 2007 the blog search engine Technorati registered over 112.000.000 of such sites.

Types of blogs

There are several types of blogs differentiated not only trough content but trough the way they are written or delivered.

Personal Blogs

Personal blogs are the most common ones and they often become more than a way to communicate being a reflection of the owner over life, things or art. Few blogs reach fame but there are personal blogs can quickly gain ground. Another type of personal blog is the micro blog which is an extremely detailed blog trying to capture a moment in time. Some sites like Twitter allow bloggers to instantly share thoughts and feelings with friends and family.

Organizational and corporative blogs=

Blogs can be used internally to enrich communication and culture within a corporation and externally as marketing or PR.

Blogs according to type

Some blogs are focused on a certain subject like politic blogs, travelblog, home blogs, fashion blogs, project blogs, education blogs, classic music blogs, juridic blogs (also blawgs).

According to media type

The blog including videos is called vlog, the one including links is a linkblog, the one including a sketch portfolio is called sketchblog and the one including photos is a photoblog. Blogs containing short messages and media content are called tumbleblogs and blogs written to the typing machine and then scanned are called typecast.

According to device

Blogs are also defined after the device used to write it. A blog written on a mobile device like a mobile phone or PDA could be a moblog.

Blogsphere

The community of all collected blogs is known as a blogsphere. Since all blogs are on the internet by definition they can be interconnected trough a social network trough blogrolls, comments and links.

Blog Search Engines

Several blog search engines are used to search blog contents like Bloglines, BlogScope and Technorati. Technorati is among the most popular blog engines and offers current information on both popular searches and tags used to classify blogs' publish. Research community works to invent new surf ways trough the huge quantity of information in blogsphere.

Blog communities

There are several communities connecting people to blogs and bloggers to other bloggers, like: BlogCatalog, MyBlogLog.

Blogging and advertisements

There's a common thing for blogs to include commercials, either to financially benefit or to promote the blogger's favorite cause. Blogs' popularity led to fake blogs, where a company creates a fictional blog as a marketing tool to advertise a product.


Popularity

Researchers analyzed the dynamics of blogs' popularity. In essence there are the modes: popularity trough reading and popularity trough affiliation.
