BitTorrent

BitTorrent is a point-to-point software developed by Bram Cohen and BitTorrent Inc and is used to download and upload files using BitTorrent protocol. BitTorrent was the first software written for this kind of protocol and us usually nicknamed "Mainline" by developers referring to its official origins.

Starting with the 6.0 version BitTorrent was renamed "microtorrent" (µTorrent). Following this BitTorrent is not opensource anymore and is available only for OS Windows and Mac X 10.5.x.

History

The 4.20 version was called BitTorrent Inc. Allegro, as referring to protocol extensions developed by the company in order to accelerate downloading and uploading performances and ISP administration.

Before the 6.0 version, BitTorrent was written in Python and was a free software. The source code for versions 4.X and 5.X was lunched under Open Source BitTorrent license as a modified version of Jabber Open Source. Versions up to and including 3.4.2 and 4.0 version were re-licensed as GPL (General Public License).

Features

BitTorrent client allows users to search and download torrent files using a search field included in the main window. The current client has a series of features among them being the possibility of parallel, multiple downloads. BitTorrent also has a few statical views, tables and graphics which allows the user to see the background events.
