BitDefender is an antivirus software developed in Romania, based on SOFTWIN company's software. BitDefender was launched in November 2001 and it is currently at the 13th version. The 2010 version was launched in August 2009 and includes several protections and performance improvements.
BitDefender includes antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall, private control, users control and safety copy for both companies and home users. All these are available in the Total Security version.

History
BitDefender replaced the AVx(AntiVirus eXpert) products of SOFTWIN. Between 1996 NS 2001 AVx became a product available all over the world offering intelligent updates without users' intervention and having an intern browser that scans and monitors all downloaded files. AVx had the first behavior based on blocking technology and was the first antivirus product to include personal firewall characteristics. The BitDefender group broke away from SOFTWIN in 2007.
BitDefender products
The BitDefender range includes antivirus products for home users, business, companies and ISPs. Home Editions support Microsoft Windows, Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and Mac OS X (Beta). Business and Enterprise editions support Microsoft Windows, Linux and FreeBSD. The current version the Home / Home Office Security range includes antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall, e-mail spam filters, backup, tune-up and parental control. An online base scan is offered free on BitDefender site. Although the free version requires a free registration and is valid one year after registration.
BitDefender is designed to protect computers against viruses and spyware. Older versions are available as free download when a new version is launched. The first free version was the 6th version and since May 2009 the 12th version is available free for download.

Uninstalling
BitDefender may be uninstalled, either using system tools or using a special uninstalling tool.
Auslogic
Auslogic sells with license a re-named version of BitDefender 2010.
Support
Although in 2009 was criticized in May 2009 as being irresponsible, support is available non-stop via phone, e-mail and livechat.
The Trojan.FakeAlert.5 problem
In March 20 2010 computers protected by BitDefender running OS on 64 bits were affected by a malfunction that considered infections all executable files and their dll files. All these files were marked Trojan.FakeAlert.5 and moved to quarantine. This action led to inoperative systems and programs affecting people all over the world.
