A bit is the base information unit used for computers and telecommunications. The bit represents the quantity of information that can be stored by a device or other physical systems that may exist in two states. These two states are: two steady positions of an electric switch, two distinct voltage levels allowed by circuit, two distinct levels of light intensity, two directions of magnetization or polarization, etc.

For computers bit may be defined as a variable or a computer quantity that may have two possible values. These two values are often interpreted as being the numbers 1 and 0.
