In computers, the backup refers to realizing copies of data in order to use or restore the original one in case of loses. A backup has two main purposes:

  1. restore the data after a catastrophe;
  2. restore a small amount of data if they had been erased or broken.

Before data are sent to the backup location they are selected, extracted and handled. There have been developed different techniques for optimizing the backup process. These include optimizations for working with open files but also compressing, encryption, cloning.
