BIOS
From Saferpedia
In IBM compatible computers the system based on input / output known as BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is a standard defining a firmware interface (term used in electronic for small software internally controlling an electronic device).
BIOS is the start program of the computer designed to be the first executed code when the computer is started. The initial function of BIOS is to identify, test and initialize system devices like video card, Hard Disk, Floppy disk and other hardware components.
BIOS establishes machine's hardware in a known given setting so the software stored on compatible storage media to be loaded, executed and to offer control over the computer. All this process is called booting.
