ASCII

The ASCII acronym comes from "American Standard Code for Information Interchange" and represents a set of characters. This set is formed from 96 characters including upper and lower letters and 32 unprintable control characters each of those having assigned a number to obtain a uniformity between different devices. Most computers nowadays use an extend set of characters with characters and diacritical signs.
